The Cost of Damage from Rod Float

The energy unleashed on your equipment from unchecked rod float is tremendous. The cost of repairing the damage is equally sobering. Consider a typical case.

The cost of a repair rig will average $550 an hour in the Permian. A cheap rig might run $400; an expensive one $700.

If you are completing a full tubing job, the cost could easily run $20,000-$25,000 on a shallow well of 2,000-3,000 feet. On a deep well (say 8,000 to 10,000 feet) the cost can fall between $50,000 and $70,000! Granted, if the repair is a simple insert pump change, your cost might be half of those numbers.

That is still a ton of money spent on repairs that can easily be prevented.

In our latest Two-Minute Drives video, Cory Wesson, an electrical engineer at SPOC, talks about rod float and how to prevent it.

Check it out and if you’d like to talk about it, we would love to chat.

Stay safe and we’ll see you in the field soon.
